Slavery and the Civil Rights Movement - Lesson Organisation

Mrs Devine's Year 9 Class

Task:

To research an area of the main topic and write a section for this wiki. The class has been put into groups. Each group will decide on their area and divide this further between the group members. Students may work in pairs to undertake the research. Each student should contribute to the wiki.

The class is organised into teams. We are going to give the teams a score after each lesson/task.

Weekly Plan:

Week 1: Planning the research.

• Topic/task discussed.
• Planning sheet filled in.
• Mindmap to activate prior knowledge - as a team using A1 sheets.
• Using books to add in more topics to mindmap.

Week 2: Wiki planning.

• Decide on Team Names.
• Each team to decide which area of the topic they are going to specialise in.
• Teams to divide tasks down to members - working alone or in pairs.
• Each student to think of main questions that they are going to research.
• Beginning of research using books and computers.
• Remind students to note sources of information down to use in wiki.

Week 3: Research

• Remind students about task
• Discuss research techniques
• Noting sources of information
• Time to research from books and internet

Week 4: Research and writing up

• Remind students about the task
• Check on students in each team
• Show students how to log on to wiki
• Continuing to research
• First drafts put onto wiki

Week 5: Research and writing up

• Remind students about the task
• Issues about using a wiki
• Continuing to research using Word
• Show students how to save Word documents as text files
• Transfer text onto wiki
