Martin Luther king
Martin Luther king was born on January 15th 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin has become a symbol for the civil rights movement. There are monuments and honors in his name across the country. Martin’s success didn’t come easily. He and his family were constantly in jeopardy. After telling people not to use the bus in Montgomery, martin was arrested. He received hate mail and phone threats and his house was bombed.
Martin was criticized by other people in the civil rights movement. Some did not agree with martin about a nonviolence situation. Sometimes his closest people to him disagreed with him. Leaders of other civil rights organizations also questioned his leadership. Martin realized many angry whites wanted to kill him. In some of his speeches martin sometimes mentioned being killed. He kept saying that the struggle for freedom must be a nonviolent situation.
There are many failures along the road to winning equal treatment for blacks in American. Martin wanted to end racist laws only in the south, but in the north as well. But many people in the northern cities, especially in the black ghettos, did not believe in martin’s nonviolence. They believed that only violence would achieve there goals. This gave rise to a new movement in black power. It became popular in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston and Philadelphia. Riots broke out, and, martin continued to plead for nonviolence. In 1964, martin was awarded the Nobel peace prize, the most important prize in the world given to those who work for peace.
